It's hard to imagine the cruelty of the Russian winter bear hunt.

A mother bear is violently shaken from her winter hibernation, forced out of her den, and shot by a wealthy trophy hunter. She dies bravely protecting her den, while inside her tiny and defenseless cubs are left motherless. It's heartbreaking to think of the cubs orphaned and left to slowly freeze to death.

Each year, den hunting leaves up to 4,000 cubs motherless. Some of these homeless cubs end up as pets to local villagers, while others are taken to entertain tourists or be eaten in restaurants. Most are abandoned and left to die.

200 dogs were killed by inhumane measures in Baghdad, Iraq on Sunday, marking the beginning of a government campaign to reduce the animal overpopulation problem that plagues the country. These drastic actions were taken in response to a local public outcry for officials to do something about the stray packs of dogs that can cause human health and safety problems.



SPCA International adamantly condemns the inhumane methods employed in the campaign, including using poisoned meat and rifles. These means cause extreme and prolonged agony. There are humane alternatives that have proven effective and SPCA International encourages the Iraqi government to immediately stop the inhumane killing and implement humane methods.


Today, SPCA International began an effort to reach out to Iraqi officials to offer help in developing a more humane and long-lasting solution to the country's stray animal problem.



"Killing strays alone is merely a band-aid approach to reducing the number of unwanted dogs," says SPCA International Director of Communications, Stephanie Scroggs. "In order to better manage any stray animal population a combination of tactics must be used including spay and neuter, vaccinating healthy animals and euthanizing those that are sick or aggressive."



SPCA International, and others in the animal welfare movement, know that this 3-pronged approach works. Without this combination of solutions, the Iraq stray population will never be controllable and the inhumane practices currently being used will continue.

On 21/05/2008 an English resident in Limassol Cyprus rang Argos Sanctuary to report that a dog was tied up (like in a crucifixtion) above his balcony in Limassol from 5.15am until 11.15am.
Argos immediately reported it to the local police and the police went to the flat but by that time the dog had been moved inside the apartment. As the police found the dog inside they could not prove who it was that had tied the dog to the balcony. The Police spoke to the dog owner and as there was not enough proof who had actually commited this terrible act, they said nothing could be done.

Argos Sanctuary decided to take the case to court but the police closed it due to lack of evidence. The President of Argos had a meeting on 05/08/08 with the Ministry to reopen the case and they now need your support.

This poor creature is still with the owners who subjected it to this horrific cruelty and God only knows what other acts of cruelty it has been subjected to since.

We desperately need your support to prioritise this case so they can save this tortured animal and prosecute the owners.

Ultra-fine wool growing is an intensive animal industry. Specially-bred sheep are kept indoors in individual small pens 24 hours a day for four or five years. Nylon coats are worn by the 'shedded' sheep to further ensure that dust and dirt does not enter their fleece -- and, like every other intensive animal industry, the behavioural and social needs of the sheep, intrinsic factors which provide quality of life, are completely ignored.

The impacts of chronic stress caused by an inappropriate environment are obvious. The confined sheep continually chew on the wooden slats and strands of wire which enclose them. Repetitive body movements were also observed - classic stereotypic behaviours caused by a barren environment (which leads to chronic boredom), combined with the inability to exercise, or to perform simple natural behaviours such as the ability to graze on grass.

A petição, que reuniu até ao momento 18.000 subscritores, é a mais forte reclamação alguma vez dirigida ao legislador português acerca de matérias relativas à protecção dos animais, dado que se trata de uma petição em que não se pede apenas uma medida específica e isolada mas sim todo um conjunto de medidas legislativas de protecção dos animais de Portugal integradas numa lei que condense, agilize, modernize, reforce fortemente, torne mais justo e clarifique o estatuto de protecção jurídica dos animais e que defina, de forma clara, concreta e restritiva as implicações práticas, em termos de normas reguladoras, proibições, obrigações, sanções e procedimentos, que um tal estatuto deve estabelecer.

“É justamente porque se trata de uma petição tão completa, que apoia uma proposta que é também um caderno reivindicativo muito forte e exigente, ao mesmo tempo que razoável e realista, que reputamos a adesão a esta petição como sendo extraordinariamente importante e louvável. É mais uma prova, que vem corroborar tantas outras, nomeadamente os impressionantes resultados do estudo «Valores e Atitudes dos Portugueses Face à Protecção dos Animais», de que as cidadãs e os cidadãos portugueses querem que o Estado Português mude de atitude em relação aos animais do nosso país, passando a tornar-se um seu defensor e zelador, ao invés de continuar a destinar-lhes a indiferença ou a infligir-lhes danos, como até aqui tem feito. O Estado não tem sido uma pessoa de bem nesta área e é tempo de o passar a ser. Cabe ao Parlamento fazer com que assim seja”, afirmou Rita Silva, Vice-Presidente da ANIMAL.

Para Miguel Moutinho, Presidente da ANIMAL, “este é o tempo da mudança. Estamos no início de um novo ano parlamentar. Há um ano que o “Manifesto ANIMAL” se encontra com os grupos parlamentares, para análise e reflexão deste compreensivo documento. Agora, é tempo dos grupos parlamentares e dos deputados passarem à acção legislativa efectiva neste domínio, tendo um bom documento de base como útil suporte para poderem produzir a lei de protecção de que os animais de Portugal precisam e que os portugueses querem ver implementada. Além disso, a um ano de eleições, é importante que os líderes políticos e parlamentares, assim como cada deputado, compreenda que o que for feito nesta matéria nos tempos mais imediatos virá, sem dúvida alguma, a definir o sentido de voto de muitas portuguesas e de muitos portugueses que querem ver finalmente satisfeito o seu desejo de viver num país que respeita e protege minimamente os seus animais e que, nesse sentido, querem que os seus representantes eleitos tomem as medidas que reflictam esse desejo.”

Além destas 18.000 assinaturas, o “Manifesto ANIMAL” e a reclamação legislativa de um código de protecção dos animais têm sido apoiados de maneiras muito diferentes, todas elas vindo reforçar o caso a favor da tomada desta medida. A título de exemplo, é de referir que, até ao momento, mais de 10.000 mensagens de e-mail foram endereçadas, ao longo de um ano, ao Presidente da Assembleia da República, pedindo ao Parlamento que tomasse a medida que agora é ainda mais expressamente instado a tomar. Também os líderes parlamentares receberam milhares de mensagens no mesmo sentido ao longo deste ano, tendo outras mensagens seguido igualmente para as direcções dos seis partidos com assento parlamentar. Acresce que, simbolicamente, através do site da campanha, www.ManifestoANIMAL.org, tanto na versão portuguesa quanto na inglesa deste site, um total conjunto de 10.120 pessoas registaram, até ao momento presente, o seu apoio a estas reclamações, enquanto 11.114 pessoas subscreveram as duas petições online (portuguesa e inglesa) a favor destas reclamações – que, apesar de não serem formalmente válidas, têm um importante valor simbólico.

“A audiência com o Senhor Presidente da Assembleia da República marcará o arranque definitivo da segunda fase desta campanha, durante a qual nos esforçaremos por trabalhar com os grupos parlamentares e com os parlamentares para que efectivamente o actual estado de coisas neste campo mude de forma muito importante. A protecção dos animais é, hoje, uma questão política porque é extremamente relevante do ponto de vista social, além da importância moral de que inequivocamente se reveste. O Parlamento deve reconhecê-lo e, desse reconhecimento, deve finalmente surgir uma forte e importante consequência prática de natureza legislativa”, defende o Presidente da ANIMAL.

No child should die of preventable causes, yet even in age of advanced medical technology, malaria claims the life of one child every 38 seconds. Almost one million children die every year from this entirely preventable disease. These numbers are simply unacceptable!
